Constitution INV-12 encodes this as a binding invariant: WCAG 2.1 AA is enforced on every pull request by jest-axe and Playwright-axe.
Conformance target
WCAG 2.1 AA across all production routes. AAA where achievable without degrading the editorial voice.
Contrast contract
Body text ≥ 4.5:1 against background. Primary accent (#B85A3E) on paper (#F5F1EC) measures 5.8:1 and is permitted at any size. Secondary accent (#D97757) is permitted only at ≥18px regular or ≥14pt bold.
Reduced motion
prefers-reduced-motion: reduce disables non-essential animation, including the reading progress bar and any future scroll-scrubbed visualizations on The Index microsite.
Keyboard navigation
Every interactive surface is reachable and operable by keyboard. Focus is always visible (2px outline, 3px offset, primary accent).
